Senior Manager : Development

The Ottawa Humane Society is a non-profit, community-based organization and a registered charity. Since 1888, we have been the leading organization providing a safe haven for sick, injured and homeless animals in Ottawa. We are currently recruiting for an exciting leadership role within our fundraising team, Senior Manager: Development.

The successful candidate will need to be a creative and strategic thinker with at least 5 years of demonstrated experience and performance in managing multi-channel fundraising campaigns along with 5 years experience managing staff to oversee a team of dedicated professionals working in a face paced multi-campaign environment to achieve the OHS fundraising goals.    

Department:   Development

Hours of work: 75 hours biweekly  

Salary: commensurate with experience

Estimated Start Date: ASAP

Professional Responsibilities include:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate OHS annual giving plans for direct mail, telemarketing, face-to-face campaigns; monthly giving and major gifts
  • Develop written and other materials to support OHS fundraising initiatives
  • Cultivate, develop and maintain relationships with OHS clients and prospects
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with OHS partners and contractors to achieve OHS and development department goals
  • Supervise and coordinate development staff and contractors
  • Manage and coordinate fundraising resources
  • Prepare and deliver written and verbal presentations
  • Be aware of and make use of community resources
  • Provide advice and assistance to the Director: Development & Outreach, Executive Director, OHS board and committees

Administrative Responsibilities include:

  • Represent the OHS in a professional manner
  • Be thoroughly familiar with pertinent legislation, regulations, guidelines, and OHS policies
  • Ensure best practices and consistency in donor communications in collaboration with the OHS Communications Department
  • Participate in supervision, evaluation and training sessions
  • Prepare accurate expense accounts and other forms
  • Produce written reports and records
  • Develop and maintain records
  • Network with other professionals
  • Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required
  • Provide training and orientation to new staff and volunteers as required
  • Supervise and support development staff
  • Train and supervise student, volunteer and work placements
  • Be familiar and ensure compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures

Program Development includes:

  • Participate in appropriate OHS committees
  • Evaluate program objectives
  • Participate in the identification and achievement of OHS objectives
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of social, environmental issues relating to animal welfare and development
  • Participate in public relations and promotional activities

Required Qualifications are:

  • A degree or diploma or commensurate experience in direct mail, telemarketing, face-to-face, monthly giving and major gift fundraising programs
  • 5 years of demonstrated performance at a management level in development
  • 5 years of demonstrated experience managing a team


  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English.
  • Bilingual (English/French) preferred 

Essential duties and working conditions:

  • Employment is conditional upon maintaining a valid driver’s license and access to an automobile
  • Will be required to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Employment conditional upon maintaining confidentiality of OHS information
  • Employment is conditional upon the ability to work around all species of animals safely
